Rules
To
participate in the GIWFBYUFPEC, all you have to is submit your predictions for
a given BYU game at this link
before the game begins. All submissions after kickoff will be disqualified and
discarded. You can take 5 minutes now and submit all of your predictions at once, or wait as the season develops and pick each game the week of. If you submit multiple predictions for the same game, I will use the latest qualifying pick (that is, the latest pick submitted before the game began.)
Scores
Disclaimer: I will be calculating all of our scores, so it isn’t critical that you understand exactly how the scoring system works. In a nutshell, you can get 50 points if you predict BYU to win 35-10 and BYU wins 35-10. The further away you are from predicting the perfect score, the lower your score. But for those who would like to know the details under the hood, here goes:
Scoring an Individual Game:
Each prediction has a maximum of
scoring 50 points. 20 points are awarded for correctly predicting the winner of
the game. Additionally, correctly predicting BYU’s score will result in up to
15 points, and up to 15 points are awarded for correctly predicting the
opposing team’s score. Each point away from the actual score is a -1 deduction.
You cannot get lower than 0 for any scoring category.
Example 1: I pick BYU to win 24-14. BYU actually wins, and
the score is 21-7.
- I get 20 points because I correctly picked BYU to win.
- I predicted that BYU would score 24. They only scored 21, and so I was 3 points off. I earned 12 points for my BYU score prediction. (15 points for perfection minus a 3 point deduction for being 3 points off in my prediction)
- I predicted that the opponents would score 14. They only scored 7, and so I was 7 points away. I earns 8 points for my opponent’s score prediction. (15 points for perfection minus a 7 point deduction for being 7 points off in my prediction = 8).
Therefore, I earn a total of 40 points for my prediction this
week. (20 for the correct winner + 12 for BYU’s score + 8 for the opponent’s
score).
Example 2: I pick BYU to lose 14-20. BYU actually wins
35-28.
- I get 0 points because I picked the wrong team to win.
- I picked BYU to score 14, they actually scored 35. Since I was 21 points off in my prediction, I get 0 points for my BYU pick. (15 points for perfection minus a 21 point deduction for being 21 points off in my prediction nets a negative number, and so I hit the “mercy rule” minimum of 0 points.)
- Even though I incorrectly predicted the outcome of the game, I get 7 points for my opponent’s prediction. I predicted 20, they scored 28, and so I was only 8 points away. (15 points for perfection minus an 8 point deduction for being 8 points off in my prediction = 7)
Therefore, my total score for this week is 7.
Scoring the Season:
The
overall standings are determined by the sum score of each player’s top six
individual game scores. Thus the maximum point total that any player can earn
is 300 points. That means to be overall winner of the game you must pick at
least 6 games over the course of the season. Picking more than six games will
improve your chances of winning, but badly predicting one week will not sink
your season. It is consistency that will win you the coveted prize of being the
pick ‘em champion!
Please comment if you have any questions on the rules or scoring.
Happy picking!
